Weekend Box Office Results: Stop saying Kick-Ass flopped
First off, no it didn't. A $30 million production based on a comic that has LESS of a following than Watchmen, which only appealed to its core group and nothing more at the box office, isn't a flop if it makes 2/3 of its budget back opening weekend. What we need to be doing right now is talking about how great the film is, not how bad the box office was. Who cares if the stupid flying dragon movie did more money because it's still drawing 3D ticket prices? I don't. I care that a truly unique and fun vision of comic books that isn't cut from the same stinking repetitive cloth is going to get trashed in the media and online because it didn't suck every last dollar from the pockets of America. See it because it's good. Talk about it because it's good. Word of mouth can buoy a film significantly. What do I mean? See the 30% drop for Date Night this week? That's because people told other people that it's actually quite pleasant and funny. It was projected to slip more than that. The mission now shifts to making sure people know to see Kick-Ass because it's worth seeing. Oh, and between DVD and the next few weeks of box office, it still has a shot to almost double it's production budget. That's never a bad thing.
Enough Monday bitching, here's the results haiku style:
1.) How to Train Your Dragon - $20 million (Accuracy of prediction - 75%)
It may be quite cute,
but you'll forget it exists
within the next month.
2.) Kick-Ass - $19.75 million (Accuracy of prediction - 61.5%)
This deserved better.
Tell your friends to see it now.
Please do it for me?
3.) Date Night - $17.5 million (Accuracy of prediction - 80%)
Way to go people!
I thought this would sink away,
but it held steady!
4.) Death at a Funeral - $17 million (Accuracy of prediction - 87.5%)
You can't be mad here.
That's a lot of dinero
for a weird remake.
5.) Clash of the Titans - $15.5 million (Accuracy of prediction - 92%)
Say bye to Greek Gods.
The true Harryhausen fans
will not miss you much.
Overall accuracy of prediction - 79%
After a good run,
I'm back to mediocre.
Sadly, I'll take it.

Without knowing actual numbers for the marketing, even if it was almost 2/3 of the budget (let's say 20 million), the movie's STILL going to clear a tidy profit. If it had been released in 3D, it would have been inflated even further because everyone's willing to pay more these days.
I do wonder how Kick-Ass missed so completely for you, though. It doesn't sound like you're someone stuffy enough to poo-poo the violence, so at least I can respect the difference of opinion. That said, I don't see how it's outdated when it seems to be addressing the current post-Dark Knight era of comic movies. I also found it genuinely funny and didn't see much that was a rehash. In fact, I found it surprisingly original. Dragon is harmless, but it will be quickly forgotten. It's Kung Fu Panda-esque.
I must admit I haven't even seen Kick-Ass and it'll probably only happen by coincidence if I do. I know that a review based on trailers, previews and cast is of very little value and who knows, I might be pleasantly surprised...it has happened before. BUT if the previews, some-what sells the movie for what it is, I don't see myself enjoying it at all. I don't mind violence, harsh language, or any of that stuff, it just doesn't seem funny or in any way original to me. Funny you should mention Kung Fu Panda, which was the best DreamWorks movie prior to "Dragon". I'm willing to bet my entire fortune, that both of those movies will outlast "Kick-Ass" by a million miles. I'm also willing to bet, that Kick-Ass will be on the cheap aisle around this time next year and probably forgotten by most in 2-3 years....if it's lucky! As for the humor in it, (and I might be completely wrong) what I've seen so far, seems like "old-woman-dancing-hiphop", or "I'm-a-nerd-but-i'm-cool-cause-I-say-stuff-that-normally-a-cool-guy-would-say" kinda humor, which is not particularly my cup of fun.
Well, with all due respect, it's pretty hard to discuss the merits of a movie with someone who hasn't seen it. I get that the marketing doesn't appeal to you, which is fine. I also get that there's probably a good chance that you won't like it if and when you ever see it. I just have no way to argue since you're in the dark. Thus, I'll just say that I believe you're impression is wrong. The cast is great...and is mostly full of people you haven't seen acting before (save for Cage and McLovin'), so dismissing them without ever seeing them do anything before seems odd. In my opinion, it is funny, it is quite original, and it makes a better point than the "E.T." analogy made by How to Train Your Dragon. You're right in that Kung Fu Panda is the best Dreamworks animated film...and I never see or hear ANYBODY discussing it anymore. Those movies are forgotten almost instantly. I'm not saying YOU are going to like Kick-Ass more than How to Train Your Dragon. I'm just suggesting that the former has more significance and weight.
Obviously I can't judge first time actors without seeing them in action, but I can judge by especially McLovin', who's probably the one thats going to ruin the whole movie for me. I can also tell that I probably won't find it funny to hear a little girl saying "fuck" all the time and use language you'd normally expect from a "tough guy"....that kinda humor goes in the "grandma-dancing-hip hop" category.
How many people do you, on a regular basis hear discussing Disney's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs"? My guess is, probably not so many. But I bet you can't find one person who does not know the movie, despite it's ripe age of 77 years. I can assure you, that both "Kung Fu Panda" and "How to Train Your Dragon" will be on A LOT more DVD shelves than "Kick-Ass" 20 years from now. "Kung Fu Panda" is 2 years old and people are still talking about it...well, we're a pretty good example of that. Only time well tell, but I very highly doubt that "Kick-Ass" will be mentioned much in 2 years.
Sure, I concede that Dragon will be on more shelves...but that's not a standard of quality, right? I mean, Paul Blart hit $100 million. The highest grossing animated film isn't a Pixar movie, it's Shrek 2 for God's sake. I just want to see Kick-Ass, a movie that is unique, do well. And I think that Dragon, while charming, is fluff. I may not discuss Snow White often, but I talk a LOT about Pixar stuff...because it's good. McLovin' has a small role and is actually quite good. The previews have only showed one or two scenes of his. And what makes Hit Girl funny isn't her cursing, it's that she's tougher and more manly than the older males. The gag is that this little girl is more bad ass than mafia goons, superheros, and 99% of action heroes. That's what's funny.
Well, then it just comes down to individual taste , but I do agree 100% that Pixar is awesome and the absolute superior animation studio. I'm just happy to see that DreamWorks are getting in the business of making good movies with good stories as well, which "Panda" and "Dragon" most def is. They made a smart move to pick up Chris Sanders. Again with individual taste, I'm just not super into kids out smarting or out tough'ing mobsters and such. It has happened many times, that trailers etc have not sold the movie for what it is, so who knows, I might think "kick-Ass" is cool, once I get to watch it on DVD.
